ARMENIAN
NATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL OLYMPIADS
The National
Astronomy Olympiad in Armenia was founded in 1976. H.A. Harutyunian was the
organizer of the first two Olympiads. However after 1970s, a long period passed
without school Olympiads. Only in 1995, on the initiative of the Byurakan Observatory
(without support from the Ministry of Education and Science, MES), a new (3rd)
astronomical Olympiad was organized due to efforts of A.M. Mickaelian and A.E.
Grigoryan. The final stage was combined with the First Byurakan Summer School for YSU students and was held in “Nor
Amberd” rest-house not far from Byurakan, on Aug 20-28, 1995. Later on, in
1999, Astronomical School Olympiads were included in the program of the MES and
have been held every year.
Dr. H.A. Harutyunian (1999), Dr. A.M. Mickaelian (2000), and Dr. A.A.
Hakopian
(since 2001) chaired the National Olympic Jury. Other active members of the
Republican Jury have been: Dr. A.V. Oskanian (also the chair of
the Yerevan city Jury), A.E. Grigoryan, M.V. Gyulzadyan,
Dr. S.E.
Nersissian, Dr. G.A. Ohanian, Dr. E.L.
Karapetian, and Zh. Avetisyan.
School students of the 9, 10, and 11 year of education
(about 15, 16, and 17 years old, respectively) take part in the Olympiad. The
Armenian Astronomy Olympiad is being held in 4 stages: I stage – Olympiads at schools
and organizations, November; II stage – Olympiads in towns and cities, January;
III stage – Olympiads in Provinces of Armenia, March; IV stage – All-country
(Republican) Olympiad in Byurakan, April. As the V stage can be considered the
Camp for selection and training to IAO, typically in June in Byurakan.
