CHANGE OF THE EDITOR

Starting with this issue, Lusine Sargsyan is the Editor of the ArAS Newsletter. First, we would like to thank Dr. Tigran Magakian, the ArAS Vice-President, who served as the "ArASNews" Editor in 2002-2004 and released 12 informative issues with articles concerning the ArAS and Byurakan affairs, international and local meetings, anniversaries of Armenian astronomers, astronomical education in Armenia, etc. We also wish Lusine productive and successful work in preparing the future issues, as well as more activity to our Society in general, which is in fact being reflected in our Newsletters.

ArAS IV ANNUAL MEETING and

GERMAN-ARMENIAN WORKSHOP ON ASTROPHYSICS

"Advances in Galactic and Extragalactic Astronomy"

29-31 August 2005, Byurakan (Armenia)

The ArAS IV Annual Meeting will take place in combination with the German-Armenian joint workshop "Advances in Galactic and Extragalactic Astronomy" on August 29-31 this year in Byurakan.

As before, the scientific topics include almost all branches of modern research and will not restrict any participation. We have set the following topics so far:

o        Exasolar planets

o        Young stars and related objects

o        High-energy astrophysics

o        AGN surveys

o        Physics and Evolution of AGN

o        Databases and Virtual Observatories

The German-Armenian workshop is a part of an astronomical research collaboration involving German and Armenian astronomical institutions, including the Hamburger Sternwarte (HS), Max-Planck-Institut fur Extraterrestrische Physik (MPE, Garching), Max-Planck-Institut fur Astrophysik (MPIA, Heidelberg), Institut fur Theoretische Astrophysik (ITA, Heidelberg), Max-Planck-Institut fur Kernphysik (MPK, Heidelberg), Max-Planck-Institut fur Radioastronomie (MPIfR, Bonn), Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam (AIP), Landessternwarte (LS, Heidelberg), Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO), Yerevan State University (YSU) and Yerevan Physics Institute (YerPhI).

Astronomical Educational matters

In a few days, on April 16-17, the Armenian astronomy Olympiad among the school pupils will take place in Byurakan. 25 pupils will participate in it, most of them from the Yerevan specialized schools on physics and mathematics. As before, we expect to discover new clever and skillful children, hoping some of them may become astronomers in the future. Let us recall once more our best teacher, late Armen Oskanian, who had prepared many pupils and achieved with them a number of high-rank prizes in the international astronomy Olympiads.

There are two more events we plan for this year. The next Euro-Asian regional astronomy Olympiad will be organized in Byurakan at the end of September or the beginning of October. Some 40 pupils will participate. For an acquaintance with the local conditions and discussions concerning the organization of the meeting, Dr. Mikhail Gavrilov, the Chair of the International Astronomy Olympic Committee, visited Armenia during the last fall. This Olympiad is a prelude before the international Olympiad planned for Byurakan for 2008. It will be devoted to the memory of Dr. Armen Oskanian.

Finally, we are going to organize a Summer school for the University students on August 25-31. The best students from both general physics courses and specialized in astrophysics ones will take part. The Byurakan astronomers and some other invited speakers will give reviews on different important topics of modern astrophysics, as well as a lot of useful practical exercises, including observations will be organized for the students. We plan that some 15-20 students will be invited. At the end of the summer school, they will be present at the scientific sessions of the German-Armenian workshop.
